SCO Site Attacked, Again

Someone hacked The SCO Group Inc.'s Website and added some bogus JPEGS saying "We own all your code. Pay us all your money." The website is fixed, but here is a screenshot from the hacked site.

Go here for some more info from eWeek.

P.S. In addition to the main SCO Web site, the Lindon, Utah-based Unix company's alternative sites, www.thescogroup.com and www.caldera.com, were also showing the hacked image.

Some more info on Slashdot article: AOL Releases Netscape Beta, Based on Firefox

Slasdot recently posted this story:
Netscape has released their new prototype browser for Windows based on Firefox 0.9.3. The prototype's development was outsourced to Mercurial Communications and includes several Netscape specific extensions. The biggest difference from Firefox, however, is the ability to switch to the Internet Explorer rendering engine from within the browser using an IE ActiveX control. The browser is currently available for a limited download.
Well looks like there is a Cnet News.com article with some more info.

China blocks access to Google News, group says

Google News launched its Chinese version in September and agreed not to list certain news on the site. The English Google News (www.news.google.com) is being blocked by China because it includes publications disliked by the government. Even Reuters tried accessing the English Google News, but all attempts are futile.

My Ubuntu Linux Arrived

Ubuntu Linux is a new Linux flavor based on the new Gnome 2.8 and it includes the latest other key applications, every version of Ubuntu is also supported with security updates for 18 months. The first public release of Ubuntu was the Ubuntu 4.10 Preview (codenamed "the Warty Warthog", or just "warty"). Plus you can order a free CD from them (S &H included) instead of burning you own. So I ordered about 10, because they want everyone giving them to friends, and today, 2 months later, it came. The CD and packaging itself is beautiful. Each x86 (PC) based package includes 2 CDS, one is a live boot CD and the other one is a full-fledged install CD. So I booted up using the live CD. The first thing I noticed is that it hides all the start-up text you usually see in Linux with a nice start-up picture. Once I was all booted up I noticed that my keyboard did not work, but I was still able to mouse around. The actual interface of Ubuntu is beautiful. Instead of having a start-menu type thing like most versions of Linux have it has a more Mac OS X type thing were all the options are brilliantly organized in a menu bar at the top. Ubuntu's default web-browser is Firefox! Much better then the default web-browser on other Linux versions. Here is a list of all the stuff I thought was very cool about Ubuntu Linux and separated it greatly from other Linux versions (this might actually be a good Windows replacement if you can get the keyboard to work).

1. I was able to do almost everything a average user would want to do without seeing one command-line screen.

2. Automatic scroll wheel mouse support.

3. The open source alliterative to Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, is included and works beautifully.

4. Little things like the way the menu bar clock works and the way the background dims, like in Windows, when to go to the logout screen.

5. It was able to easily connect to my Windows network without using any Unix commands!

6. I was able to see my CD-rom drive, hard drive, and file system easily.

Go here for more info about Ubuntu Linux and to order a CD

P.S. They even have a PowerPC (Mac) version of Ubuntu Linux.

UPDATE: I was using a USB keyboard so in order to get it to work I had to go into the boot options . Also, I was looking at the built-in screensavers and man they are cool!

Your obvious lack of technical standing to be writing a "review" of any Linux distribution barely seems worth mentioning in contrast.

And may I ask, do you mean the decoration, the colours, or the pictures?
Did you think your design is better than mine?
Just to let you know, if you're talking about design, which the dictionary defines as "a basic scheme or pattern that affects and controls function or development", then yours is as bad as mine. Because, in case you did't know, the template you're using is the Blogger Minima template. And that is what I am using.
It was very uncivilised of you to criticise someone's blog like that.
Everyone has differing tastes and opinions.
Think about that.

I guess you have not realized that you can't read one word of your blog because their is absolutely NO contrast between the type and the background. I really do like your writing, it's just that I had to manually remove the background in order to read it!

PiperJaffray puts $100 Price Target on Apple Shares

Big thanks to Your Mac Life for this info:
Broker PiperJaffray overnight upped its price target on Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) stock from $52 to $100 - close to double the stock's price on Friday - citing findings from its own survey of iPod users. "We believe that the remarkable satisfaction with the iPod creates a word-of-mouth wildfire that generates new customer interest in Apple products," the broker told clients. The $100 price target means the stock would trade at 37 times the broker's calendar 2006 earnings and cash estimate per share. The broker said, "While this multiple is a premium to the comp group, we believe it is warranted given the growth potential of the iPod and its carryover to the core Mac business.

Slim CRTs to Take On LCDs

Executives at a display conference here said Thursday that significantly thinner CRT (cathode ray tube) displays will be available next year and are expected to be less expensive than trendy flat panels that use newer technologies such as LCD--liquid crystal display--and plasma displays. LG.Philips Displays is already making the tubes for the thin models in limited quantities and expects thin CRT televisions to be available in the United States starting in late 2005. The sets will initially be slightly more expensive than current CRT models, but prices should come down quickly.

Replacing Passwords

How many people use the same password for everything? "A major problem for identity systems is the weakness of passwords," Bill Gates, CEO and Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft said. "Unfortunately, with the type of critical information (protected by) these systems, we aren't going to be able to rely on passwords. Moving to biometric and smart cards is a wave that is coming, and we see our leading customers doing this."

UPDATE: Google's instructions for setting up Gmail and my email client (in my case Apple Mail) are flawless. I am downloading email as we speak!

UPDATE: I am almost done downloading email. The email you download from Gmail is in no way different from the original (as far as I can tell), HTML email looks great, and attachments download too. It also seems that Gmail's servers are extremely fast. The one problem with it is that email you sent and email you received in Gmail are both treated like new mail in your email clients inbox.

UPDATE: All email downloaded and everything running smoothly!

.TK

Ever hear of a .TK domain? .TK Domains come in free and paid versions. The paid version, $9.95 USD, is the same as a normal .COM domain it can be looked up in whois DBs and everything else, except that you have too work with the country of Tokelau to pay for it (I have never done that so I am not sure it is the best idea). But to sign up for the free version all you need to do is go to dot.tk register a domain and select the free option. The free version does have some problems:

1. It uses frames to hold a website not DNS so it is good for you if your website is located for example here: http://www.freeservers.8j.6.com/~joe.

2. Because it uses frames users can not bookmark specific pages and each page does not have its own title.

3. Also because it uses frames it is not that search engine friendly.

4. Again because it uses frames: if your website has a favicon it will not show up.

Theses are a lot of problems with free .TK domains but it is better than spending $10. Am I right?

You can see a good example of a free .TK domain here.

Associated Press Mess Up

Here is a statement from the Associated Press correcting a earlier statement:

In a Nov. 10 product review of the Mozilla Firefox browser, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the Internet Explorer browser from Microsoft Corp. does not have a pop-up blocker. The summer release of Service Pack 2, a security update available only for Windows XP computers, included a pop-up blocker.

I wonder if the Associated Press upgraded to SP 2?

Gmail Enables POP (For Some)

Thanks a bunch Gizmodo, I would like to comment on this but it does no seem to be working for me.
___________

Looks like Gmail is about to officially offer POP access, according to this message in their support database. This function has already been enabled by lots of third party tools, but has been expected from Google themselves for quite a while. It doesn't appear to be actually be enabled yet—not for me, anyway; a few people are reported to have gotten it working—but it looks like it is just around the corner. Text for their configuration instructions is incomplete, make sure to use port 995 for pop.gmail.com and to enable SSL. One current drawback is that mail sent from the web client appears in the Inbox. This is good news for mobile devices, as even the most basic usually have a POP client of some kind, even if they can't run Gmail's web-based client. And that means using Gmail as your primary email account is going to be a lot more viable. (Thanks, Vic and Animaniac!)
Support Page [Gmail.Google]
Update: It's official. They say they're intro'ing it in "phases."
Why don’t I have POP access? [Gmail.Google]
__________

One thing I can say is that if this makes its way into a public version of Gmail it will cost money, because it by-passes the text-adds that Gmail displays next to your emails.

Google Tip: Search By Number

Parcel tracking IDs, patents and other specialized numbers can be entered into Google's search box for quick access to information about them. For example, typing a FedEx tracking number will return the latest information on your package. Other special search by number types include :

UPS tracking numbers
example search: "1Z9999W99999999999"

FedEx tracking numbers
example search: "999999999999"

USPS tracking numbers
example search: "9999 9999 9999 9999 9999 99"

Vehicle ID (VIN) numbers
example search: "AAAAA999A9AA99999"

UPC codes
example search: "073333531084"

Telephone area codes
example search: "650"

Patent numbers
example search: "patent 5123123"
Remember to put the word "patent" before your patent number.

FAA airplane
registration numbers
example search: "n199ua"
An airplane's FAA registration number is typically printed on its tail.

FCC equipment IDs
example search: "fcc B4Z-34009-PIR"
Remember to put the word "fcc" before the equipment ID.

Great Google Tip

If you put a tilde (~) in front of a search term in Google you get results that include synonyms to the word you entered. You can even use it in way that this example demonstrates "~pc ~apple", where it gives you results that include the words "Computer (a synonym to PC)" and "Mac (a synonym to Apple)."

[Thanks Flames of Plastic!"]

P.S. You can get this and even more info at the Google Cheat Sheet.

Virus Alert!

Here is some info about a new computer virus [Thanks eWeek!]

Two new versions of the venerable Bagle worm are on the loose, infecting PCs and opening backdoors as they go.

The pair are virtually indistinguishable from one another and also are quite similar to most of the other Bagle variants. The main area of concern for enterprises is the fact that both Bagle.BC and Bagle.BD open a backdoor on TCP Port 81 on infected PCs. Both versions were discovered early Friday morning.

Bagle's success puzzles virus researchers. Read about it here.

Both variants are capable of spreading through peer-to-peer networks, as well as via e-mail. Both arrive in e-mail messages with spoofed sending addresses and one of a handful of meaningless subject lines, such as "Re:" "Re: Hello" or "Re: Thank you." The bodies of both variants contain just a single emoticon, and the name of the virus-infected attachment is either "Price," "price" or "Joke."

Go here for the rest from eWeek!

Were We Stand

Over the last couplle of weeks I have made a plethora of changes/additions to the Tech info Blog! these include:

1. iTunes song links in the side-bar. If you click on one of these links it takes you to that song in iTunes, if you buy that song or any other song in a 24 hour period I get a commission (you can click the link again to begin another 24 hour period). Don't know what iTunes is? Get some more info here.

2. I think I have fixed the problem of my darn Google Ads not changing *yay*

3. You will see different cool tech items from our sponsors in the side-bar also, please feel free to check these out!

4. I have set-up something of a link-exchange thing. Get some more info here!

5. I have started a "Website of the Day" but I am out of ideas for it, so email your site or any other one here sam@theplaceforitall.com

I also plan on doing this stuff soon:

1. Work on a better commenting system.

2. Maybe, just maybe if I start getting real income from this site I can have random tech prize giveaways!
